WHO WE ARE The mission of The Life You Can Save Australia is to alleviate poverty and suffering for some of the world’s poorest people in the most effective way possible. By placing a premium on transparency and evidence, we aim to reimagine the philanthropic sector and inspire new enthusiasm amongst Australian donors. In this way, we aim to dramatically increase annual donations to highly impactful charities that reduce suffering and premature death and improve lives and livelihoods. The Life You Can Save Australia was founded by the Australian philosopher Peter Singer, widely recognized as one of the world's most influential contemporary philosophers. We advance the ideas in his 2009 book, The Life You Can Save: Acting Now to End World Poverty, which Bill and Melinda Gates described as "a persuasive and inspiring work that will change the way you think about philanthropy." In this seminal work, Peter argues the moral case for those in wealthy nations to do more for the world’s poorest (illustrated by his famous Girl in the Pond thought experiment). The Life You Can Save Australia offers practical solutions to this ethical problem; philosophy may be in our DNA, but as an outcome-focused organization, our feet are firmly anchored in the real world. We speak to both heads and hearts, trying to make it easy and meaningful to make a difference. By providing 19 highly-vetted charities, The Life You Can Save Australia brings clarity to the charitable landscape, empowering everyday Australians to make a bigger impact.
