We in “rich” countries rarely think about the fact that many diseases that those in developing countries battle on a daily basis, often in life-or-death contexts, are now unheard of for us. Many are incredibly simple to treat, yet crippling or deadly—especially to children—when knowledge or supplies to do so are not available. Examples include diarrhea, pneumonia, malaria, schistosomiasis (worms), reversible blindness, AIDS, and malnutrition.
