Help DMI raise $750,000 to save children’s lives in Mozambique

INTENSAÚDE is a planned DMI health mass media campaign supported by the Ministry of Health in Mozambique. It will build on the recent results of a randomised controlled trial in Burkina Faso, conducted by DMI and evaluated by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. This showed that a radio campaign had a significant impact on several target behaviours, notably treatment-seeking for children with symptoms of pneumonia, diarrhoea and malaria.

The INTENSAÚDE media campaign has three linked objectives:

  • To increase the proportion of children in Mozambique who receive treatment for pneumonia, diarrhoea and malaria by encouraging their parents to recognise the symptoms of these diseases and to take them to a health facility, and thereby to save 6,200 under-five lives in two years
  • To build on the Burkina Faso results and generate additional evidence that a media campaign can increase treatment-seeking behaviours, and thus to persuade governments and donors across Africa to spend millions of dollars on national media campaigns, saving hundreds of thousands of children’s lives
  • To help us to understand how to maximise the impact of a media campaign on target behaviours

The campaign will broadcast nationwide on radio using DMI’s Saturation+ methodology. The project will run for two years (mid-2016 to mid-2018), with 18 months of broadcasting. Final results will be available in late 2018 (although we expect to have initial results in late 2017).

We need to raise $750,000 to launch this project. The total budget is $3.05m; we have already raised $1.75m from a private foundation, and are planning to commit $550,000 that has been donated to DMI by GiveWell supporters. These funds will only be released if the whole project is funded. Every dollar that you give will therefore unlock a further $3 of funding. Please contact us if you are interested in finding out more, or support us by donating online.
