Why does The Life You Can Save accept cryptocurrency?

The Life You Can Save aims to make “smart giving simple”, and accepting cryptocurrency donations is a great way to do that. We want to give donors as many options as possible to support high impact charities, and we also want to help the nonprofits we recommend connect with new supporters.

With more than 220 million crypto users worldwide and the value of many cryptocurrencies rising, we see crypto-philanthropy as a new and exciting fundraising avenue to help the global poor. We’ve written more about how crypto fits into The Life You Can Save’s strategy and why we’re prioritizing this market here.

As just one example of the opportunities we see in this area, we’re helping to organize an online Crypto For Good event on December 2 that will feature Sam Bankman-Fried, Caitlin Long, Laura Shin, and other crypto VIPs alongside our founder Peter Singer. All money raised at this event will go to benefit GiveDirectly.

Which cryptocurrencies do you accept?

We currently accept more than 40 cryptocurrencies, including: Aave (AAVE), Amp (AMP), Balancer (BAL), Bancor Network Token (BNT), Basic Attention Token (BAT), Bitcoin (BTC), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Chainlink (LINK), Compound (COMP), Curve (CRV), Dai (DAI), Decentraland (MANA), Dogecoin (DOGE), Enjin Coin (ENJ), Ethereum (ETH), Fantom (FTM), Gemini Dollar (GUSD), The Graph (GRT), Injective Protocol (INJ), Kyber Network (KNC), Litecoin (LTC), Livepeer (LPT), Loopring (LRC), Maker (MKR), PAX Gold (PAXG), Polygon (MATIC), Ren (REN), Storj (STORJ), SushiSwap (SUSHI), Synthetix (SNX), UMA (UMA), Uniswap (UNI), Yearn.Finance (YFI), Zcash (ZEC), 0x (ZRX) and 1inch (1INCH). We are continually in the process of adding support for new cryptocurrencies, so please check back soon for more giving options.

Are crypto donations tax-deductible?

Donating crypto may be a highly tax efficient way to give for some donors. We will provide a receipt of your transaction to help you claim any deductions you are entitled to, but as cryptocurrency is quite complex we advise you to contact your accountant for personalised tax advice. While anyone can give through this page, only Australian donors will be able to claim any eligible tax relief.

US donors should give crypto through this page to claim any tax benefits they are entitled to.

Some of our recommended charities and partners accept crypto donations outside of the US and Australia. Please email us at for more information.

What is #CryptoGivingTuesday?

#CryptoGivingTuesday is the biggest occasion of the year for crypto fundraising and giving. Established in 2019 by The Giving Block to encourage crypto users to make donations and raise awareness among nonprofits about the ease and the benefits of accepting cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. It falls on the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving in the U.S.

Today, #CryptoGivingTuesday drives millions of dollars worth of crypto donations toward nonprofits around the world. We hope you’ll celebrate this occasion by supporting the outstanding charities we recommend, which you can do using the widget on this page. You can also amplify the impact of your gift by sharing it on social media, using the #CryptoGivingTuesday hashtag.

What is #BagSeason, and how is The Life You Can Save planning to celebrate it?

#BagSeason is the crypto community’s annual fundraising season that starts with #CryptoGivingTuesday, and runs throughout the month of December. #BagSeason aims to bring visibility to nonprofits that accept crypto, and to inspire crypto users to donate to charitable causes before the end of the calendar year.

The Life You Can Save will celebrate #BagSeason by co-hosting an online What Good is Crypto? event on December 3 (RSVP here). Our founder Peter Singer will join some of the biggest names in crypto including Sam Bankman-Fried, Haseeb Qureshi, and Laura Shin, in a discussion about how crypto philanthropy can fight poverty and promote financial inclusion. All money raised at this event will go to benefit GiveDirectly. Up to $600,000 in donations will get matched; don’t miss this chance to multiply the impact of your gift!

Is The Life You Can Save involved with NFTs in any way?

Peter Singer’s 1972 article “Famine, Affluence, and Morality” has changed the lives of countless people around the world. Our own organization was named after a book that expanded on ideas first voiced in this landmark article, like the idea that just as it would be wrong to leave a child to drown in a shallow pond, so it is wrong to fail to help a child – or an adult for that matter – living in a low-income country who is at risk of dying from preventable, poverty-related causes.

To commemorate 50 years since its publication, “Famine, Affluence, and Morality” is now available as a unique Non-Fungible Token. Proceeds will benefit The Life You Can Save, and the buyer will receive a special opportunity: a 30 minute Zoom call with Peter Singer! The auction only runs through December 9, so place your bid for this unique NFT immediately!
